What Are Sports?

Sports

Sports are a group of competitive physical activities or games that aim to use, maintain or improve the participant’s physical abilities and skills. They are also a source of entertainment for participants and spectators.

The definition of sport is subjective and varies widely among individuals and cultures. Some activities, such as golf and cheerleading, are not sports in the competitive sense but can be regarded as such because of their organised structure.

Some examples of non-competitive, organised activities that are popular and attract many spectators include fishing and dancing. However, E-Sports and motorsports may be considered to be a sport in the competitive sense because they involve skill and dexterity in operating the controllers of machines which do most of the physical exertion.

The emergence and diffusion of modern sports are part of broader global flows of people, technology, finance, images, and ideologies. These processes have a number of unintended as well as intended consequences.
